Inspired by conversations with real women, this blog from Redeemed Girl Ministries answers some of the common questions women ask on their faith journey.
I was seated in a coffee shop in London, reading my Bible, and awaiting my flight back to Houston, when two American college students slid into the booth in front of me and asked a simple question.
Hey...sorry to bother you, but we see that you are reading your Bible. We would like to ask you a question...can you tell us who Jesus is? We’ve been backpacking Europe for a few weeks, and we’ve seen the paintings, the statutes and the icons in all the cathedrals ... but we still don’t know who this Jesus guy is. ...can you tell us about Him?
“Could I tell them who Jesus is?”
My words fail to convey the weight of their question at that time in my own journey with Jesus. At that time, I was a seminary student, longing for God to use me in some way to advance His kingdom, and was asking Him my own questions:
What is my calling?
To whom do you want me to minister?
How can I best serve You?
Dumbfounded, I paused and stared back at them blankly. Truly not believing that they just asked me the most important question one can ask while still breathing oxygen on this earth. The question of Jesus is the foremost of all questions this side of eternity. Honestly, growing up in the “Bible-belt” of the USA, I didn’t know that there were people who didn’t know about Jesus. I knew that many chose not to follow Him, but it never dawned on me that there were those, right under my nose, who were uniformed about the Son of God.
What resulted from their question that afternoon literally changed the course of my life. Once I realized these young women were serious. I turned in my Bible and read to them one of my all-time favorite Scriptures.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 ESV
From there I was able to tell them The Story. The story of God’s eternal plan of redemption, whereby He sent His Son, Jesus, to save us from our sins and to restore us to relationship with Himself. As I shared with these young women about my Jesus. My Jesus who isn’t an ancient icon or religious relic, but the living and breathing God of the Universe who came to rescue me and who I know...personally, I felt....ALIVE!
For the first time I knew who God was calling me to minister to. He opened my eyes to see that there were millions of women, living in America, who literally have no clue who Jesus is. I walked away from that moment with more empowerment than all my seminary training had afforded me. I knew my purpose--tell women about Jesus.
Six years later, this is still my purpose, my joy, and the activity that makes me feel...alive. The title of this blog is not at all random. Truth be told, Redeemed Girl Ministries first began with a question, asked by girls, with hearts honestly seeking answers about God. Towards that end, we at Redeemed Girl Ministries want to answer your questions. Each week, we will post a blog called “Questions Girls Ask.” We’d love to hear your questions about God, faith, the Bible and living for Him in this world. Let us know what is on your heart.
